This summer, a dedicated group of Family and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners will travel to a remote coastal community in the Dominican Republic to provide essential health services. The focus will be on primary and secondary prevention of chronic illnesses, especially noncommunicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes. Working alongside local grassroots organizations, the team aims to close awareness gaps and improve health outcomes through screenings, examinations, and education.
Addressing Health Challenges in Remote Areas
Remote communities often face limited access to healthcare, which leads to late diagnoses and poor management of chronic diseases. In the Dominican Republic, many coastal villages lack regular medical services, making prevention efforts critical. This mission targets these gaps by offering:
Medical examinations to identify health issues early
Blood pressure screenings to detect hypertension
Diabetes screening to catch elevated blood sugar levels
Educational sessions to raise awareness about chronic illness prevention
By focusing on prevention, the mission helps reduce the burden of disease before complications arise.
How Primary and Secondary Prevention Work Together
Primary prevention aims to stop disease before it starts. This includes educating people about healthy lifestyles, nutrition, and the importance of regular check-ups. Secondary prevention focuses on early detection and treatment to prevent progression. For example, identifying high blood pressure early allows for timely intervention to avoid heart disease or stroke.
The mission’s approach combines both strategies. Community members receive screenings that can reveal hidden health problems. At the same time, educational talks explain how to maintain health and manage risks. This dual focus creates a stronger foundation for long-term well-being.
Collaborating with Grassroots Organizations
Partnering with local groups is essential for success. These organizations understand the community’s culture, language, and specific needs. They help coordinate logistics, recruit participants, and provide ongoing support after the mission ends.
This collaboration ensures that the medical services are culturally sensitive and accessible. It also builds trust, encouraging more people to take part in screenings and educational activities. The mission’s impact extends beyond the visit by empowering locals to continue health promotion efforts.
What to Expect During the Mission
The team will set up a temporary clinic in the coastal village, equipped to perform:
Comprehensive medical exams
Blood pressure measurements using validated devices
Blood glucose tests for diabetes screening
Interactive workshops covering diet, exercise, and chronic disease management
Volunteers will also distribute educational materials tailored to the community’s literacy levels. The goal is to make health information clear, practical, and easy to apply in daily life. We will also distribute dignity kits, walking canes, medications, grocery, sneakers and other essential items to address social determinants of health.

Why This Mission Matters
Noncommunicable diseases cause a large share of illness and death worldwide, especially in underserved areas. By focusing on prevention and education, this mission helps reduce avoidable suffering and healthcare costs. It also strengthens community resilience by promoting healthier habits and early care-seeking behavior.
Supporting such initiatives can inspire others to contribute time, skills, or resources to improve health equity globally.
